The Battle of Merville Gun Battery occurred on 6 June 1944, as part of Operation Tonga, part of the Normandy landings, during the Second World War. Allied intelligence believed the Merville Gun Battery was composed of heavy-calibre guns that could threaten the British landings at Sword Beach, only 8 miles (13 km) away. The 9th Parachute Battalion, part of the 3rd Parachute Brigade attached to 6th Airborne Division, was given the objective of destroying the battery. However, when the battalion arrived over Normandy, their parachute descent was dispersed over a large area, so instead of over 600 men, only 150 with no heavy weapons or equipment arrived at the battalion assembly point. Regardless, they pressed home their attack and succeeded in capturing the battery, only to discover that t...

Captain James Cook, FRS, RN (7 November 1728[NB 1] -- 14 February 1779) was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy. Cook made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. Cook joined the British merchant navy as a teenager and joined the Royal Navy in 1755. He saw action in the Seven Years' War, and subsequently surveyed and mapped much of the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River during the siege of Quebec. This helped bring Cook to the attention of the Admiralty and Royal Society. This notice came at a crucial moment in both Cook's care...

More information about the video content bellow: 1. Tonga became known in the West as the Friendly Islands because of the congenial reception accorded to Captain James Cook on his first visit in 1773. He arrived at the time of the ʻinasi festival, the yearly donation of the First Fruits to the Tuʻi Tonga (the islands' paramount chief) and so received an invitation to the festivities. According to the writer William Mariner, the chiefs wanted to kill Cook during the gathering but could not agree on a plan. 2. The primary island, Tongatapu, has a number of tricks up its sleeve, such as the spectacular blowholes along the south western coastline. You’ll find four miles of coast with countless blowholes that can spout water 30 meters high. Go ahead and take bus from Nukualofa towards the village of Houma (Half an hour) and make sure to be there at high tide for any truly spectacular view. 3. The current royal dynasty of Tonga was founded in 1831 by Taufa’ahau Tupou, who took the name George I. He consolidated the kingdom by conquest and in 1875 granted a constitution. Tonga became independent on June 4, 1970. The government is largely controlled by the king, his nominees, and a small group of hereditary nobles. 4. Not much is known before European contact because of the lack of a writing system, but oral history has survived and been recorded after the arrival of the Europeans. By the 12th century, Tongans and the Tongan paramount chief, the Tuʻi Tonga, had a reputation across the central Pacific—from Niue, Samoa, Rotuma, Wallis & Futuna, New Caledonia to Tikopia—leading some historians to speak of a Tuʻi Tonga Empire. 5. Despite being a small country, Tonga has its own army. Furthermore, it participated in WWI, as part of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and in WWII. In recent times, Tongan soldiers were sent to Afghanistan and Iraq and participated in several peace keeping missions. 6. Located in Oceania, Tonga is an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean, directly south of Samoa and about two-thirds of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand. Its 169 islands, 36 of them inhabited cover an 800-kilometre-long north-south line. The largest island, Tongatapu, is where the capital city of Nukuʻalofa is located. 7. The Free Wesleyan Church is the largest Methodist denomination in Tonga, and also the state church. Everyday life is heavily influenced by Polynesian traditions and especially by the Christian faith; for example, all commerce and entertainment activities cease on Sunday, from the beginning of the day at midnight, to the end of the day at midnight. The constitution declares the Sabbath sacred forever. And one it seems was chosen, for the location of a rather amazing ancient structure. One of the most mysterious megalithic monuments in the world, an ancient “trilithon,” known as the “megalithic gate of Ha’amonga.” The mainstream academic explanation for the site is as follows: “Ha’amonga, is a megalithic trilithon that was built in 1200 AD, built by a king of the time, as the entrance to his royal compound, “Heketa.” As with many intriguing and confusing ancient structures upon earth, if you dig further than mainstream attested views, you will often unearth another opinion. Often suggesting a far longer, far more astonishing tale set much farther back within our past… And the Tonga gateway, is no exception... Although mainstream archaeology, through native folklore, and currently accepted, chronological knowledge of the previous inhabitants of the islands, suggests that the Tonga trilithon is but a mere 800 years old… There exists 3 rather large problems with this conclusion... Until of course, erosion inevitably takes hold, drawing a line between a discernible archaeological feature, and an apparent geological one… The Tonga gateway, now consists of three coral limestone slabs, each still weighing in at around 40 tons. 3 rather large elephants in the room for mainstream archaeology… Like with all other trilithon’s, dotted around the world, the documented, primitive capabilities, during modern historical timelines, will continue to demonstrate a lack of credibility to the school taught fanciful tales given for their construction. On the contrary, these sites indicate a once far more capable civilization, left somewhere within earths very distant past. For example, there are many legends linking the Ha’amonga gateway to Maui, as William Corliss astutely put it, “Maui, is but a label, slapped upon everything found within the south pacific which cannot be explained.” End quote. Additionally, to disassemble the phony, public narrative further, Corliss’s own research, other explorers of the island, along with erich von danikens compelling and comprehensive studies of the island, found that islanders, although willing to tell tall tales to tourists, lacked any reasonable replication skills at a later date, put simply, they were lying. Indeed, although they spoke of a king some 800 years ago, the massive stones being a gateway to his “Heketa,” after extensive exploration of the island by many people, especially behind the gateway, which the entire site is seemingly focused in on, no trace of an “Heketa,” has ever been found. Some specialists who have studied the erosion patterns upon the coral stones, have come forward with claims that the Tonga site is a ruin far older than currently thought, and that although the stones are rough in appearance today, they were once much larger and also smoothly cut into squares, using an unknown, ancient technology… This, some claim may have happened as far back as 10, maybe even 100 thousand years ago. Was the Ha’amonga gateway, some form of ancient stargate? Why place it exactly where it is? Why build it exactly how it was built? Who would go through such effort of transporting many 40 ton blocks of coral, to this small island then somehow, constructing this once enormous, and mysterious structure, aligned as a gateway that led to, “nowhere?” Or did it?... http://www.ancient-origins.net/ancient-places-oceania/megalithic-gate-haamonga-maui-001187 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ha%CA%BBamonga_%CA%BBa_Maui

Here is a list of 7 odd and silly micronations around the world. These tiny independent nations are small countries with their own taxes, society and politics. Republic of Rose Island (1967-68) The Republic of Rose Island was a short-lived micronation 7 miles off the Italian Coast. In 1967, Italian engineer Giorgio Rosa funded the construction of a 4,300 sq ft platform complete with a restaurant, bar, nightclub, souvenir shop, and post office. The goal was to set up a bar and trattoria on the self-built island, and enjoy the views of the Adriatic shipping lanes, sipping a beer as boats sailed by. The Italian government would not approve Rosa's platform and so he declared it an independent state. Shortly after its declaration of independence, the Italian Government was tired of dealing with the issue and sent the Navy to blow up the Republic of Rose Island. 6. Principality of Sealand (1967-present) I mentioned the Principality of Sealand in the video on Fortified Places, but I wanted to share some more information that I found out about this notorious micronation. Located six miles off the eastern shores of Britain, it is one of four Maunsell Naval Sea Forts deployed by Britain during World War 2. During the war, it was home to 150-300 personnel, radar equipment, two 6-inch guns, and two 40mm anti-aircraft autocannons. All on that little platform? Nope, there's all kinds of stuff hiding under the water. After being abandoned by the Royal Navy it remained empty until 1967, when the fort was occupied by Major Paddy Roy Bates, a British subject and pirate radio broadcaster, who got some guns and some ammo to evict some competing radio pirates. He then declared the platform The Principality of Sealand; a sovereign, independent state. He was now the Prince, and he declared his wife the Princess for her birthday. How sweet! I don't know why he didn't just call himself the King. Why Prince? An attorney found a legal loophole allowing Roy to claim the fort due to fact that it was in international waters, and that it was up for grabs. The British Government tried to kick them out but a judge ruled that Sealand was in fact outside of British jurisdiction. But, the Navy did blow up another platform nearby to prevent a similar takeover there. The helicopters that carried the explosives flew over Sealand and the navy boat with the demolition crew passed close by and shouted “You’re next!”. If you thought this was enough drama, just wait. There is actually a Rebel Government of Sealand living in exile led by Alexander Achenbach who declared himself the Prime Minister of Sealand, hired some mercenaries, and kidnapped their son, Michael. The Bates family enlisted armed assistance, including a helicopter pilot who had done some work on James Bond movies, and headed back to Sealand to storm the fortress and take back their country. The intruders quickly surrendered, and were held as prisoners of war. The governments of the Netherlands, Austria and Germany petitioned the British government for their release, but again, the United Kingdom said that Sealand was outside its jurisdiction. Germany then sent a diplomat from its London embassy to Sealand to negotiate for Achenbach's release. Roy Bates relented after several weeks of negotiations and subsequently claimed that the diplomat's visit constituted de facto recognition of Sealand by Germany. Sealand’s official language is English, its currency is the Sealand Dollar, and it has stamps and passports in circulation. You can also buy your own noble title of Lord, Lady, Baron, Baroness and Knight. I don't know if I could pick just one! No smoking or drinking is allowed and you can only take a max of three five-minute showers per week. Its population rarely exceeds five people, and for the sake of security, visitors are unwelcome. Yeah I think I'll just check it out on Google Earth. Recently declassified documents show that the UK drafted plans to take the tower by force over 30 years ago, but such plans were not implemented due to the potential for loss of life, and the public relations disaster that would have followed. 5. Republic of Minerva (1972) The Republic of Minerva was briefly de facto independent in 1972, until it was invaded by Tonga and is now known as the Minerva Reefs. Both the North and South Minerva Reefs are used as anchorages by yachts traveling between New Zealand and Tonga or Fiji.

Regardless, they pressed home their attack and succeeded in capturing the battery, only to discover that the guns were of a lower caliber than expected [Czech-manufacture 100mm]. However, these still had the range (over 8000 metres) to hit targets on Sword Beach and in Ouistreham. Using what explosives they had been able to recover, the surviving 75 men tried to disable the guns. When the British paratroopers had withdrawn, two of the guns were put back into action by the Germans. Another attack the next day by British Commandos failed to recapture the battery, which remained under German control until 17 August, when the German Army started to withdraw from the area.

This notice came at a crucial moment in both Cook's career and the direction of British overseas exploration, and led to his commission in 1766 as commander of HM Bark Endeavour for the first of three Pacific voyages. In three voyages Cook sailed thousands of miles across largely uncharted areas of the globe. He mapped lands from New Zealand to Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean in greater detail and on a scale not previously achieved. As he progressed on his voyages of discovery he surveyed and named features, and recorded islands and coastlines on European maps for the first time. He displayed a combination of seamanship, superior surveying and cartographic skills, physical courage and an ability to lead men in adverse conditions. Cook was killed in Hawaii in a fight with Hawaiians during his third exploratory voyage in the Pacific in 1779. He left a legacy of scientific and geographical knowledge which was to influence his successors well into the 20th century and numerous memoria worldwide have been dedicated to him.

Surrounded by the Arctic Ocean from the north, by the Pacific Ocean from the east and by the Indian Ocean from the south, it is separated from Africa by Suez Canal. The Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea separate Asia from Europe, farther the overland border runs through the Caucasus Mountains, the Caspian Sea, the Ural River and Ural Mountains. This boundary crosses through the territory of Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, so these states are in both continents. Armenia and Cyprus geographically are in Asia, but politically and culturally they also are considered as a part of Europe. The largest of the Asian countries by area is Russia, which occupies about 30% of the total territory of the continent. The smallest one of the independent states is the Maldives, it is an archipelago of islands famous for its beach resorts. More information about the video content bellow: 1. There is an island in Marshall Islands called the “Bikini Island”. It is used as a nuclear testing site for a United States Program called Operation Crossroads. One popular fan theory suggests that this is the place where Bikini Bottom lies and Spongebob Squarepants and his friends are the result of nuclear radiation. 2. The Marshall Islands provides the world’s largest sanctuary for sharks, which virtually doubled the protected area for sharks worldwide. 3. Elugelab, a Marshallese island, no longer exists – it was blown up by the US Armed Forces in 1952 during a hydrogen bomb test. 4. Majuro is the capital and largest city of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. It’s made up from three main islands called DUD or Dulap-Uliga-Djarrit. During WW2, United States troops invaded, but found that Japanese forces had evacuated their fortifications. A single Japanese warrant officer had been left as a caretaker. With his capture, the islands were secured. WW2 the lagoon became a large forward naval base of operations and was the largest and most active port in the world until the war moved westward when it was supplanted by Ulithi. 5. Before the missionaries came, all Marshallese people were tattooed. The ceremony was extending over a month, most painful and held to confer beauty and bring honor; it was a rite of passage to man or womanhood and was believed the only attribute to be carried beyond the grave; partaking of religion, it served as well to confirm ties of family and birth. Facial tattooing, intended to conceal the wrinkles of age, was reserved for chiefs – to whom was permitted the richest and most widespread adornment. 6. The people follow what the Bible stipulates concerning marriage: the man is the one that moves to be with the woman. But this is mainly because the culture is matrilineal. Therefore, land is passed down from generation to generation through the mother. 7. The Marshall Islands consists of 1,156 individual islands and islets, but only 29 are inhabited. Map Librarian Glen Creason of the Los Angeles Public Library shows off some spectacular pictorial maps of the Pacific by the artist Miguel Covarrubias. Read Glen's full blog post about these maps at http://www.lapl.org/collections-resources/blogs/central-library/pageant-pacific There’s more information about Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month at lapl.org/apahm. Transcript: Welcome back to the map cave, today we’re taking a look at some beautiful pictorial maps by the artist Miguel Covarrubias. He was a very fascinating character, he was born in Mexico City in 1904. Eventually as a very young man came to New York City, where he quickly established himself doing covers for Vanity Fair, he was illustrating for the New Yorker. And in 1939 they asked that he would come and create these murals at the exposition in San Francisco. And they were so popular they were probably the most popular thing at the Exposition, that they created these prints. The Library is lucky enough to have one of the original sets. This is the first of the panels, this is the peoples of the Pacific--it’s really the masterpiece of the set. But it shows all these different people from around the world in their native costumes, so you have everything from the Fiji Islands, to the Hawaiians, the native Hawaiians. Number two this is the Flora and Fauna, of the Pacific… Third is the Artfoms of the Pacific. This is the Economy of the Pacific. Poor Hawaii, just is symbolized by a pineapple, I think there’s a lot more to it than that. These are the native dwellings. There we have places like Samoa, Tonga, Fiji. Lastly, these are the native means of transportation. This one is a little less geographically accurate because there’s no scale. This pictorial map is really the gone with the wind of pictorial maps, there’s so much information, so much detail, all done with a sense of humor and beautiful color so these are really something special, it’s a shame that we’re not able to get them out of the drawers often enough and that’s why we do these kinds of things: so people realize that we have these beautiful objects that belong to the people of los angeles. Again as we say, these belong to you and not to us. And if you’d like to see them, you can come in anytime and we’ll bring them out for you and take a look.

After a while, I decided to post this video about the changes in the political map. From Myanmar to Russia, from India to Tonga we will discuss about all this major changes we see everyday on the map. Did you ever wonder how every change on the map happened? Here are some answers at least for the last two decades. If this video becomes popular, which i really doubt, then I will think about making a video for the previous decades, 80's early 90's and perhaps 70's, but those years come with many changes, you know colonies, communism,Vietnam etc. So if you liked the video feel free to leave a positive remark and perhaps like and share. No pressure. If you didn't like it , dislike the video. So thanks for watching.Ehhh, this is geting really awkard. So i will throw here some typical youtube stuff. here we go!!! I will try to upload videos on the following subjects: The Unexplained, World War 2, Space,Geography, Micronations and Politics.
